Mission Catwalk Season One

Mission Catwalk is an exciting reality TV series aimed at discovering and developing talented local fashion designers for the international market.
The first series was set at the Fashion Department at the Edna Manley College and each episode comprised of four segments: the challenge, design production, runway show, and elimination of designer. The duration of the show was 13 weeks with one contestant being eliminated each week by a panel of judges. The series culminated with two designers battling in Miami for the ultimate title of top designer at Miami Fashion week.

On June 7, 2011 the contestants along with the rest of the cast and crew were invited to an invitation only cocktail party at the Spanish Court hotel where they all watched the final episode together. The winner was selected which was an overwhelming moment especially for the crowds favourite Shenna Carby. Shenna sheds tears of joy after it was announced that she is the winner for Mission Catwalk season one. In addition to local and international exposure, Shenna Carby will receive the following prizes:

1. An opportunity to show a collection at the Miami International Fashion Week 2011.
2. JMD$250,000.00 funding to produce their own clothing line.
3. A fashion spread in SHE Caribbean Magazine.
4. Contract to sell designs at Ammar’s clothing stores.
5. Buyers meeting with local and international buyers.
6. Scholarship for further studies in fashion at Edna Manley College.
7. Industrial equipment valued at JMD$200,000.00 to set up a production studio.
8. Internship with an international design house. Mission Catwalk has given Carby renewed respect from persons who see her on the road, who used to think that she was just a girl who loves to party. "People used to see me as this girl who just dress up and go dance but they approach me differently now because of my craft and the exposure of this craft on Mission Catwalk," Carby explained. After weeks of being criticised, Carby confessed that her designs have evolved since her first showing. She admitted that coming into the competition, she designed mainly based on dancehall inspirations, but has been taught by the judges that less can sometimes be more, especially when designing for different lines. She has also realised that that has led her to a new market.

'Arise Mgazine' brings attention to Style Week

Styleweek, which is to be held from May 25-29, is gathering international steam due, in part, to an article in the April issue of respected United Kingdom-based Arise Magazine.

The article has been picked up by websites, such as models.com, and countless blogs.

According to a release from Saint International, organisers of Styleweek, the article has captured a global audience of fashion and lifestyle enthusiasts who have been expressing their interest in coming to Jamaica to participate.

Arise is Africa's foremost international style magazine. It is published quarterly and sold in over 20 countries. The magazine is also title sponsor of Lagos Fashionweek in Nigeria which was staged for the first time in March.

The magazine has confirmed its support for the Gleaner-sponsored Styleweek Jamaica 2011 and will be sending its fashion director to the event.

"For us, it's mission accomplished, as Styleweek Jamaica is the only such event, designed using historical-heritage sites as the backdrop for glamorous fashion events, thereby positioning the tourism and heritage ambitions of the city on the fashion platform of Styleweek Jamaica," explained Deiwght Peters, creator and executive producer of the event.

Event rescheduled

The Arise article highlighted that the event was rescheduled last year due to the instability of the parish caused by an incursion into Tivoli Gardens by security forces.

According to Saint International, last year's activities were "premised on giving Kingston a 'glamorous' face after the incursion".

Annually, Styleweek ends with Fashionblock on Knutsford Boulevard.

"This is the only event of its kind, and the largest live fashion event in the Caribbean and perhaps on this side of the world," boasted Peters.

Fashionblock includes a 150-foot catwalk in the middle of Knutsford Boulevard in full view of thousands.

Other features

Arise also featured Shena Moulton and new face Brad Allen in pieces from the Styleweek runway shows in a six-page editorial.

Among the designers featured were Spokes Apparel, Shades of Africa, H.O.D. by Gregory Williams, REVE Jewellery, Rick B's, Gillespie, Dexter 3D Pottinger, Andre Rowe and Drenz Fashion.

Styleweek Jamaica will have two additional events to be announced.

The signature events are the International Men's Collection-IMC (Friday, May 27) at the Devon House Formal Gardens, The International Mecca Of Style (Saturday, May 28) and Fashionblock (Knutsford Boulevard) Sunday, May 29.

A host of powerful brands have confirmed support for the event, including The Gleaner Compant Limited, Scotiabank, Jampro, Wyndham Kingston hotel, Jamaica Tourist Board, Heart Trust/NTA, Fame FM, TVJ, Kool FM, Nationwide, Carreras, Devon House, Clear Sounds, and others to be announced

Italian designer to debut at CFW caribbean fashion week.

Pesi, who also goes by the moniker 'Mima', was born in Serbia but moved to Italy at an early age where her passion for art and high fashion flourished. Armed with a strong drive to become a successful designer, she studied fashion design at the University of Florence.

Having been immersed in fashion since she was 14, after leaving University, Pesi worked as a stylist and for a number of other design labels before she decided to launch her own line.

In fact, Everblazing is not just a single clothing collection; Pesi was recently in Paris working on her men's fragrance which is going to be part of her larger brand thrust.

"At CFW, I will present two collections, one focused on the women and also the men. This is my time on the international stage and I am going all out, to put on a terrific show," said Mima.

According to the designer, her collection will incorporate a bold mix of colours from the finest Italian fabrics and leather and she is positive that Kingston will be enthusiastic about her line.

"My brand is assertive, sexy and luxurious," and from all accounts the designer's inspirations, edgy sass along with her symbolic colour palette (including animal prints) as well as her bold signature-statement accessories will be in full view at CFW.

The launch of the young designer's collection at Caribbean Fashionweek will also coincide with the opening of her Everblazing boutique in Kingston. The line will also be available online. Pesi is set to join a stellar line-up of new and established designers from Europe, America and our own Caribbean stalwarts.

Caribbean Fashionweek will take place at various locations across Kingston beginning June 8. The major exhibition, fashion shows along with the now staple superstar concert performances, will be held at the National Indoor Sports Centre.
